Meet the first international Albino model from South Africa, Thando Hopa.
Thando Hopa has only been in the industry for a few years now, working as a professional model and activist, but she is doing the most!
The model recently announced on her Instagram that she is one of the stars on the international calendar ‘Pirelli Calendar 2018’ edition.
The law graduate and model features alongside big names in the industry such as international supermodel Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o, Whoopi Goldberg and other big stars in the all-black Pirelli calendar.
Hopa is the first black South African model to be featured in the calendar, and being a Gert-Johan Coetzee girl she posed in a red Gert dress photographed by Nick Boulton.
When asked about this calendar the model said “Pirelli 2018 was really a call for diversity. When you think of Alice in Wonderland and you close your eyes, you tend to only see Alice as Caucasian because that’s the only way she’s ever been portrayed.
“It was time to break that barrier and to build a narrative of diversity and inclusion which is what Tim Walker, the photographer, did. It was a great honour for me to have a footprint in this journey of image and cultural development of storytelling because it resonated with everything I have stood for,” she added.
We asked her about how she feels concerning her being the only South African in the calendar and she said “It’s really lovely to be recognised by international brands because that speaks to growth, scope and impact. However
, I would love to do something of this magnitude in Africa, only this time to represent stories I was told by grandmother when I was a child. As talents, we should aim to develop the narratives of Africa too and look inside the continent with as much vigour and promise as we do when we look out into the global community.”
It is clear that Thando Hopa is set out to do magnificently in the industry and is surely receiving the recognition she deserves.
