The Sledgehammer VS Silence.
A sledgehammer by wiki definition “is a large manual impact tool which has a metal distinguishing it from a mallet with head made of softer material”. Thanks wiki for this definition.
Now, I am going to elaborate on the above definition making references to two keywords from the definition. The first word of reference is the word ‘manual’ and the second is the phrase ‘softer material’.
The word ‘manual ‘comes from the Latin phrase ‘for hand’ and by figurative extension, it is work done with any of the muscles and bones of the body.
Soft materials are material whose original shape can be altered either by the application of force or pressure to it.
From the above definition of the word manual, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the synonym for the word ‘manual’ ‘is do-it-yourself’ (DIY). You will agree with me that whenever one has to perform a task without the help of a machine, a lot of energy and time are involved, hence, an uphill task.
The keyword in the soft material definition is the word ‘altered’. When a particular object could be altered, it means that some people will always be in doubt of its originality or authenticity.
The word sledgehammer is derived from the Anglo Saxon ‘Slaegan’ which means to strike violently. A Sledgehammer can be used for different purposes. One of which is in the construction of rails. But for the purpose of this article, I want to let you know that the sledgehammer is often used in destruction works.
I know that by now you are probably wondering whether I am here just to tell you what a sledgehammer is and what it’s used for. Well, that’s not what I’m here to talk about.
The sledgehammer and its uses in this article represent some of the words we say and their effects respectively.
Let us correlate the significances of the three keywords, as used in this article, with the words we say.
MANUAL: hard work or stress– Meaning that talking too much saps a lot of your energy leaving you with little or no energy for the real thing, action.
SOFT-MATERIAL—words don’t carry much weight, action does. Talk is cheap.
And last is the word ALTERED. Sometimes the words we say can be altered or misconstrued by the hearer, thereby putting us in a bad position.
We learned above that the sledgehammer is used both to build and to destroy meaning that the words we say have both the powers to build and to destroy. And need I say it is easier to destroy than it is to build?
Now, enough said about words, so let us look at the other form of expression.
We all have different definitions of the word silence. But I’d like to define the word silence as a nonverbal form of communication.
Oftentimes, we are faced with life’s issues, issues that arouse a lot of emotion in us. And we feel that the only way to get the attention that we need is by screaming on top of our lungs.
But the truth is that if someone can’t understand your silence then that someone definitely will not understand your words. So spreading yourself too thin isn’t going to give you the attention that you need.
Silence helps you connect more with your inner being; makes you more aware of yourself. And when you are aware of yourself, you are able to detect the areas of your life that needs either maintaining or changing—your strengths and your weaknesses.
Maintaining silence for a particular number of minutes/hours, in some religion, is called Meditation but I choose to call it self- discipline.
Being able to be silent and calm especially when you feel the need to ‘explode’ is one of the greatest virtue ever. And the good news is, it makes you look more in control of the situation even if you are not.
Please, note that being quiet is different from being silent. I would like to define a quiet state as an inactive state—both verbally and otherwise; whereas a silent state is a no-talking state.
People usually view quiet people as cowards whereas silent people as vipers waiting to strike at any moment. This opinion or view about silent people gives them a god-like aura, instilling fear and respect in the people around them.
